The IoT Market Potential
Smarter Philippines was launched by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in 2013 with the aim of driving economic growth using technology. As part of the program, DOST’s secretary, Mario Montejo, announced Cauayan to be the first of 144 cities in the Philippines to become a ‘smarter city’. DOST also rolled out a free public Wi-Fi project that provides connectivity to over 1500 sites across the country.
Building on the positive steps taken on connectivity and network systems, a new National Broadband Plan was formulated in July 2016 to accelerate broadband deployment, which will provide the platform for IoT connectivity.
