[:en]The Southeast Asian region boasts a population of over 600 million, with cities like Manila and Jakarta ranking amongst the world’s highest in terms of population density. There is no doubt then that with its massive population, Southeast Asia becomes an ideal region for adoption of IoT and M2M technology and to ensure its implementation. Or is it?
The Asia IoT M2M Business Platform recently concluded a series of IoT and M2M industry gatherings in Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, and Bangkok – this spanned over a year, with all major local telecommunications service providers co-hosting each event. Each city has shown considerable progress and developments in its respective IoT ecosystems, and this becomes a driving force for us to continue bringing in business and investments to each location through our IoT events. Indonesia is perhaps the country in Southeast Asia which offers the biggest potential for project implementation. Apart from its sheer size—fourth largest country in the world, behind China, India and the USA—and having a dynamic and digital-minded young population, the Indonesian government has been proactively improving its infrastructure to support investments. This is evident from the launch of the Palapa Ring Program which seeks to connect the whole archipelago by high-speed fibre optic cable by 2015. The adoption of new technologies such as cloud computing and the rapid growth of e-businesses are optimistic signs of the nation’s move towards a smarter landscape. While top tier tech companies recognise the potential in Indonesia by establishing offices there, the country also has a lively tech startup scene which local telcos are investing heavily in. These small solution providers ramp up the excitement for IoT as they provide solutions which are cheaper and easier to manage; this in turn makes adoption of such sophisticated technology for Indonesia enterprises all that much easier. It also helps that the three biggest telcos have formed dedicated M2M teams and the scale of their distribution networks can only help spread the uptake.
Being the most advanced with regards to its ecosystem, Malaysia also has a sturdy governmental support with regulatory mandates buttressing the IoT and M2M industry. The country’s fragmented market is helmed by many dynamic SMBs and startups. While the local telecommunications service providers are more focused on providing connectivity, stronger support from regional and international tech profiles can definitely help shift the country’s IoT and M2M outlook. Not forgetting, Malaysia also has a healthy and lively IoT supply chain with many regional HQ offices located there.
The Philippines has two leading telcos and a host of conglomerates. This provides a good basis to ramp up the pure number of M2M connections. While the infrastructure in the country is still being developed and built up, the local telcos are already focusing on the IoT and M2M sector. This is supported with a familiar dynamic and digital-minded workforce where most enterprises at our event carried two SIM cards to enhance reliability. The presence of conglomerates the likes of Ayala Corporation, which run a host of businesses provide a great alternative to governments to spearhead large scale IoT and M2M projects. While the ecosystem is still at an infantile stage, the Philippines holds much promise with solutions growing locally, especially within the Banking and Healthcare space.
There is little surprise when the most ‘Instagrammed’ place in the world turns out to be a mall in Bangkok. Thailand is witnessing a rapid adoption of technology. Similar to Philippines and Indonesia, Thailand has a tech-savvy young population which is demanding for increasingly sophisticated technologies to enhance their lives. With a strong social media basis, Thailand continues to move up the tech ladder as its infrastructure continues to be developed and more Thai enterprises actively seeking platforms to know more about the benefits of adopting IoT technology.
The crux of the issue of bringing IoT and M2M to the Southeast Asian region is awareness. It is of paramount importance to raise awareness and educate enterprises on the benefits of adopting the technology. IoT solutions can really help alleviate uniquely local problems that enterprises face; but when can we witness the surge happen? We think this happens within the next 2 to 3 years with the joint efforts from local, regional, and international IoT and M2M specialists and players.

Governments have experimented with many solutions in a bid to solve this persistent urban issue, but only few have managed to develop ones that are both sustainable and effective.
In collaboration with IBM, the Swedish Roads Administration (Trafikverket) developed a smart road use management system implementing M2M capabilities like RFID, which saw a significant reduction in traffic congestion.
The speaker, Ole Jansson, a project manager and senior business advisor with the Swedish Roads Administration, led the operation of the Swedish congestion tax systems in Stockholm and Gothenburg. Through the introduction of innovative designs and new operational concepts, these congestion charging systems are currently the world’s most successful implementations of their kind.
Since its inception, there has been a 20 – 25% reduction in overall traffic volume. It is also estimated that 84 million euros in associated economic costs were saved, which would be re-directed to improve traffic infrastructure.

eCall cuts emergency services response time. The severity of injuries will be considerably reduced in tens of thousands of cases. You can also make an eCall by pushing a button inside the car. This next-generation traffic management solution is estimated to save hundreds of lives and billions of euros in economic losses annually.
As such, the European Parliament voted in favour of eCall regulation which requires all new cars be equipped with eCall technology from April 2018. In the event of a serious accident, eCall automatically dials 112 – Europe’s single emergency number.
Notorious for its widespread and persistent traffic problems in its metropolitan areas, Jakarta and other large Indonesian cities need to find a better way of managing the chaotic situation on its roads. Not surprisingly, Indonesia had the world’s 5th highest number of people dying from traffic accidents in 2014.

[:en]While it might be incredulous to say that paying for a taxi ride using your mobile phone is easier in Nairobi than in New York, it is in fact, true. Thanks to Kenya’s M-Pesa, a world-class mobile-money payment system, over 17 million Kenyans are able to transfer cash with just their phones. M-PESA which stands for Mobile Money (pesa is Swahili for money), is a mobile-phone based money transfer and microfinancing service and it is often referred to as the most successful mobile phone based financial service in the world. Around 25% of Kenya’s GNP flows through the system and as of November 2014, M-Pesa transactions were valued at KES 2.1 trillion, making up almost half of the country’s GDP.
The immense success of the scheme which was launched in 2007 by Vodafone has led it to expand to Afghanistan, South Africa, India, and later in Eastern Europe.
This is of course a huge feat for a developing country like Kenya. As one of the co-inventors of M-Pesa, Lesley-Ann Vaughan would tell you that developing a mobile finance solution for small payments that is easy to use—even for the illiterate—and which spans over a vast land space, is highly challenging. With poor digitised infrastructure and lack of properly trained staff, it seemed like the scheme was not meant to be for a developing country like Kenya. However, it took flight and became the most lauded service/scheme of its kind; giving millions of people access to the formal financial system and for reducing crime in an otherwise largely cash-based society.

o Indonesia -> branchless banking – to increase the reach of banking services to unbanked population

[:en]The Internet of Things (IoT) might be a very salient term in the tech industry. Connected-things is now a reality following the recent digital revolution. A GSMA report stated that China will be a global leader for M2M technology with more than 50 million connections to penetrate the market; a Mckinsey report estimated the global IoT market to potentially have a worth between $3.9 and $11.1 trillion by 2025. The aforementioned statistics foregrounding IoT as an important economic tool is just a couple among many others.
Despite the great benefits that can be brought about by the technology, IoT is still an obscure technical jargon to the public and enterprises across different verticals. The adoption of IoT especially in Southeast Asia — although rapidly gaining traction — is not attaining the desired impact and potential it is set to achieve.
Take, for instance, Indonesia. When Telkom Indonesia came up with a series of public services projects ranging from electronic services (i.e. e-office, e-kelurahan, e-puskesmas) to a mobile-based digital media that can respond to citizens’ complaints in 2014, a huge question was posed: are Indonesians ready to deal with IoT?
Tony Seno Hartono, the National Technology Officer of Microsoft Indonesia, assured that people in Indonesia are definitely competent in developing IoT-based devices, although most of them have yet to be professionally involved in it. “Not so many people have realized the huge potential of IoT,” he added.
Hence, it is important for players in the IoT ecosystem such as telcos and solution providers to work together with the public sector to raise awareness and educate end users on IoT technology. While the IoT industry can build momentum such as creating interoperability and security standards for connected devices and machines, the government can exercise leadership by partnering with the private sector, support the ecosystem via funds and grants, facilitate innovations by developing soft infrastructure, and many others.
In short, here is what government and partners can do to advance the growth of the IoT industry:
- 1. CREATE: Roll out a national plan to gain confidence among investors in the IoT venture; establish clear security guidelines to ensure public trust in IoT products;
- 2. EDUCATE: Create demand within end users by encouraging usage of IoT in public and private sectors; spur related projects, e.g. smart cities;
- 3. INVEST: Establish R&D funds and provide financial support in terms of loans, subsidiaries and grants; invest in IoT talent and infrastructure.

[:en]The Easypaisa mobile financial service provided millions of previously unbanked customers access to basic banking services in Pakistan. This was achieved through the close collaboration between Telenor Pakistan, Fundamo and Tameer Bank. Do you know that the runner-up for Twitter’s 2014 Golden Tweet came from Indonesia?
Twitter recognises the tweet with most retweets as the Golden Tweet. In 2014, the Golden Tweet went to famed American celebrity, Ellen DeGeneres for her legendary ‘selfie’ tweet which featured other celebrities present at the star-studded Oscars. What caught our attention though, was the runner-up for the Golden Tweet. Coming in second, a politically-charged tweet by an Indonesian– in-lieu with Indonesia’s presidential election in 2014–took the Twitterscape by storm. That particular tweet garnered more than a million retweets and a whopping 30 000 favourites.
The Twitter-user was nowhere near the status of Ellen DeGeneres as a public figure or in terms of followers. Yet, it managed to give DeGeneres a run for her money.
While this might come as a shock to many, we have no doubts about it. Despite being in Southeast Asia and APAC, which is often assumed to be less developed than many other regions in the world in many aspects, Indonesia is undoubtedly a social media-wired nation. Apart from managing to send a tweet propelling up to be a Golden Tweet runner-up, Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta, was touted as the world’s most active city on Twitter. With 254.4 million tweets in 2014, the city contributed 2.4% of the world’s total tweets. The city also came in fourth in the world for Facebook activeness.
This makes Indonesia not only a social media giant, but also one of the most connected nations in the world. The rapid adoption of new technologies with the presence of a dynamic, young, and digital-minded population and workforce, on top of a consumer base of 170 million people, make Indonesia a nation with increasingly sophisticated expectations. This is evident from the emergence of Cloud Computing as a major element in Indonesia IT policies; a market that is set to reach more than $120 million b 2017. This is on top of the booming e-commerce (forecasted to hit $US18 billion in 2015), e-logistics, and Finance IT sectors.
There is apparent effort in Indonesia to improve its infrastructure to meet the exigencies of a modern and tech-savvy social and economic landscape. As with other Southeast Asian economic tigers such as Thailand and Malaysia, Indonesia has decided to dive into the concept of ‘Smart Nation’, with Makassar being the first Indonesian city to launch a smart city programme. Following the footsteps of Makassar, Jakarta is next in line in realising the vision of a smart city as the authorities unveiled its Jakarta Smart City Project last December.
Indonesia came in 46th on their readiness for digital commerce according to the 2014 study by The Digital Evolution Index. The nation also came in 122nd in internet connection speed. Despite the apparent lack of soft infrastructure, the market potential in Indonesia for ICT is encouraging; evident from its dynamic and digital-minded young population. Jakarta was the world’s most active city on Twitter in 2014, contributing 254 million tweets which makes up 2.4% of the world’s total. The city came in fourth on Facebook activeness.
Apart from being social media-savvy, Indonesia has launched the Palapa Ring Program which seeks to connect the whole archipelago by high-speed fibre optic cable by 2015. The rapid adoption of new technologies such as cloud computing and the rapid growth of e-businesses are optimistic signs of the nation’s move towards a smarter landscape.

The 4th edition of the Asia IoT Business Platform was held from 28 to 29 May 2015 at Amari Watergate Bangkok, Thailand. It was the first time for the conference to be hosted in Thailand and once again, it was a resounding success. Interesting topics on the latest market trends and developments ranging from waste management and key enablers, to overcoming industry fragmentation, were discussed.
