Growth in ASEAN: Opportunities for Enterprises and Technology Solution Providers

We will be releasing the full results of our 2019 AIBP ASEAN Enterprise Digital Transformation Survey on 4th December 2019, where over 1,500 Enterprise IT stakeholders from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam gave their inputs. To make sure you receive a copy, please get in touch with your account manager.  If you’re not a current client, please fill up this form to express interest to participate in future activities we host in Southeast Asia.

TLDR:

  1. Businesses in ASEAN are increasingly exploring digital solutions
  2. Microsoft, IBM and SAP are top of the mind vendors in Southeast Asia for Digital Transformation
  3. ASEAN is in a unique position to capture growth because of demographics and pro-business

We’ve always told our stakeholders that we are strategically placed, geographically, for a good part of the next decade at least. Southeast Asian countries are experiencing rapid economic development and the businesses in this part of the world are uniquely positioned.

  1. They have reaped benefits from the stability of global economic growth since the last financial crisis in 2008
  2. Most of them are still in the initial phase of (exponential) growth without having invested inordinate amounts of capital on legacy infrastructure

“Digital Transformation” might be a misnomer in this part of the world – I believe it applies mainly to large enterprises in developed markets. Businesses in Southeast Asia, on the other hand, need to think about integrating digital technology to sustain/accelerate their already impressive current growth rates. Which paradoxically, might be less intuitive. The results of our annual survey, however, augur well for the future of digital adoption by business in Southeast Asia.

Is Digital Transformation/IoT just a passing phase?

Asia IoT Business Platform 2017 - 2019: Enterprises currently implementing and/or benefitting from IoT Solutions

An increasing number of enterprises have implemented IoT solutions for their businesses – a more than 60% increase of respondents compared to 2017. However, on this enlarged base, a lower percentage (only 4%) are reporting actual benefits from these projects. Is this an indicator of non profitable technology projects? Or are these firms yet to realise results upon increased data collection?

What are the Digital Transformation Projects being implemented in ASEAN?

We also witnessed a diverse range of companies winning the annual enterprise Innovation Awards, with some very interesting project implementations. As per previous years, the winners will be sharing their digital transformation journeys at our 2020 launch event being held in Singapore on 24 & 25 February 2020.

Strongest Brand Equity in the Digital Transformation Space in ASEAN

Preferred Vendor for Digital Transformation Solutions

As with any growing segment, some solution providers are reaping the benefits. Local system integrators remain key players (though decreasingly) in managing local relationships. In terms of brands, Microsoft, IBM and SAP were the most mentioned across all respondents surveyed.

In It for the Long Haul…

2019 Priority for Digital Transformation - Stages of Investment

We’ve been involved in this space for the past 6 years but we still believe that the opportunities for business to take advantage of potential growth is still very nascent, and fragmented.  Our survey found that more than half of the respondents are in still in the early stages of digital investments and this makes a lot of sense when you compare where ASEAN sits relative to the rest of the world. Yes, we are growing very quickly, but we’ve got a lot of ground to catch up.
