Building applications go online (Myanmar Times)

The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) is introducing an online building permit system on a trial basis in the Yangon Region. The system, which is designed to make applications more convenient, is estimated to half waiting times for approvals, Mayor U Maung Maung Soe said in a press conference held in August.

“If the application is complete and has the right information, the permit will be granted in 45 days. It took about three months before. Now the application doesn’t need to be assessed by so many people, cutting the processing time down significantly,” he said.

It took one year to launch the online construction permit system with support of the International Finance Corporation, which is a member of the World Bank Group.

The main objectives of the new system are to reduce corruption, and cut back on red tape and processing times – which are obstacles for foreign investors, said U Tin Maung Kyi, secretary of YCDC’s Building Department.

“We have made various preparations for a faster and a more systematic assessment system. We had to prepare our documents to start the project after everything was fully online,” said U Tin Maung Kyi.
