Indonesia’s new capital to be developed as smart, forest city: Minister (The Jakarta Post)

It is almost certain that the government will choose Kalimantan as the location of the new capital city although the exact location has not been decided.

Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said the infrastructure development of the new capital city would be undertaken in four years using a friendly environment and smart technology concept.

“The development of the new capital will attract the world’s attention as we will build the new capital city in Kalimantan. But we can assure that we will build a smart and forest city,” said Basuki. “We will not damage the heart of Borneo,” he added.

The new capital must also be developed into a smart and compact city with an integrated transportation system that implements the latest IT applications to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

President Jokowi “Jokowi” Widodo recently initiated the move of the Indonesian capital city from overpopulated Jakarta, out of Java Island, almost certainly to Kalimantan. The development of the new capital alone is still waiting for House of Representative’s approval, which will issue a law as the legal foundation for the new capital’s development.
